Why do we need it?
The Constitution recognizes the right to live without discrimination, but unfortunately being on the receiving end of discrimination and facing barriers can be a lived reality for people with disabilities, women, the LGBT community or members of racial, religious or political groups, for example.
This Bill provides clear rights and protection against discrimination in life for all Belizeans, and by creating a Commission and Tribunal to hear legitimate complaints of discrimination, it will provide an accessible way to resolve any disputes and find a resolution. A public opinion survey shows that the compelling majority of Belizeans are tolerant and ready for laws that protect religious belief, women, people living with disability, and LGBT people. If passed, two-thirds of people surveyed said that equality legislation would have a positive impact on their lives.
This Bill is designed to work for everyone: nobody will lose out or be unfairly targeted by this Bill, instead, all Belizeans will benefit from these sensible protections because everyone deserves to be treated decently.
